This certainly applies to citrus fruits: the more beautiful, the more popular. Fortunately, there are measuring systems by Greefa for the determination of the external quality of (citrus) fruits. PS The fruits that are less beautiful are of course not thrown away. These are used for f.e. juice or marmalade. In this way, the industry contributes to the prevention of food waste.
